Nick Czinder scored and added a pair of assists, leading the Kitchener Rangers to a 3-1 win over the Owen Sound Attack on Wednesday night. Ben Fanelli and Josh Sterk also scored for the Rangers, while netminder Franky Palazzese made 35 saves and received first star honours.
The Rangers took advantage of their first power play opportunity, opening the scoring at the 7:21 mark of the first period. The puck bounced off of an Attack defenceman in front of the Owen Sound goal and was collected by Nick Czinder who fired a quick shot on net. Brandon Hope made the initial save, but the overager corralled the rebound and slid a diving shot by the netminder for his second of the season. Ben Thomson and Ben Fanelli earned assists on the play.
Owen Sound led shots on goal 8-6 through 20 minutes.
Fanelli extended Kitchener’s lead to two goals in the early half of the second period, when his shot bounced off an Attack skater in front of the net and was redirected behind Hope. His second goal of the 2012-13 season was assisted by Czinder and Evan McEneny.
The Rangers added a third goal just 81 seconds later, when sophomore forward Josh Sterk jumped on a turnover along the boards, carried it to the net and snapped a backhand shot past the outstretched glove hand of Hope. Czinder collected his third point of the night with a helper on Sterk’s second goal of the year.
The Attack out-shot the Rangers 12-9 in the middle frame.
Cameron Brace got Owen Sound on the board with less than nine minutes to play, pouncing on a rebound in front of the Rangers net and firing it high glove-side past starter Franky Palazzese. His 24th of the season was assisted by Gilbert Gabor and Jake Dotchin.
Owen Sound held a 16-5 advantage in shots on goal in the third period, and out-shot the Rangers 36-20 overall. Palazzese made 35 saves and was named the contest’s first star.
With the win, Kitchener improves to 20-12-1-4 this season.
