Acquired by the Kitchener Rangers in the 1^st round of the 2009 OHL Priority Selection.

Murphy is an offensive defenceman, known as a great skater who loves to carry the puck out of the defensive zone. During the 2011-12 season, Murphy sat 5th in overall defencemen league scoring.

His puck-moving ability and his uncanny sense of anticipation make him a constant offensive threat. He is ready to throw out a good hip check and be physical when needed.

Murphy was drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in the  1^st round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and signed an Entry Level contract with the team in September 2011.

Murphy was honoured with the Best Offensive Defenseman award at the Kitchener Rangers Annual Awards Banquet in 2011 and 2012. He was named the OHL Player of the Week for the week of January 16-22, 2012 and was ranked best skater, best offensive defenceman and second best stickhandler in the 2012 Western Conference Coaches Poll. He was named OHL Defenceman of the Month in January 2012.

In August 2012, Murphy helped Canada's National Junior Team to a win at the Canada-Russia Challenge.

Played for Team Canada at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship.
